Functional Innovation

Functional innovation deals with  improving the products and processes in a business. It does not deal with 'strategic' issues such as which market to enter or which product to make. Rather it focuses on how existing products or business processes can be improved. The real innovators in this case are often the employees working in specific  roles, and not  the management. Organisations that are 'functionally innovative' are found to have higher profitability than competing firms. A variety a factors come into play in shaping how functionally innovative an organisation. One factor is the knowledge of tools which can be applied to generate new ideas or solve important problems.
